Why do I need to register to use Pricecharts.com?
Registration is a one-time procedure that initiates your Pricecharts.com membership and subscription services. Although there are a few resources on the site that any viewer can access, Pricecharts.com is primarily a subscriber-only service, offering the majority of its trading data, resources and services exclusively to its members. Your registration allows us to add you to our list of members (subscribers) and provide you with a unique password which enables you to access all areas of the the Pricecharts.com web site (in accordance with your chosen subscription level).

Why do I have to provide a user name and password?
Your user I.D. (your email address) and password identify you and give you authorized access to areas of this web site that are not accessible to non-members. Pricecharts.com recognizes registered users by the Pricecharts.com cookies (small text files placed on your hard drive to identify you) on your computer. If you are accessing Pricecharts.com from a different computer or your cookies have been damaged, your user name and password will still properly identify you to Pricecharts.com.

  Cookies

What are cookies, and why does Pricecharts.com use them?
A cookie is a very small text file placed on your hard drive – with your permission – by a web server. Acting like your identification card, your unique cookie cannot be executed as code or deliver viruses, and it can be read only by the server that presented it to you.

Like many web sites today, Pricecharts.com uses cookies to identify users and track their movements through the site. Specifically, cookies perform the following functions:

  • Identification. A number of areas within Pricecharts.com require that content be displayed according to your subscription level. In such cases, Pricecharts.com needs to know who you are. If this site didn't use cookies, you would have to sign in (with your user I.D. and password) each time you accessed a new page.
  • Tracking. Because each web page is unique, a service must use cookies to track your status as you move from page to page.
Cookies provide information about what's important to Pricecharts.com subscribers. This in turn makes it possible for Pricecharts.com to focus on providing the information you need.

This site will be constantly expanding and growing! In the future, if you register for products or services, cookies can help you save time by assisting Pricecharts.com in remembering who you are so that it can show you the information you have requested the next time you visit Pricecharts.com. When you register for additional products or services, all you need to do is type in your user I.D. (email address), and password – Pricecharts.com will then fill in any questions you've already answered. Of course, if you never register or leave personal information with Pricecharts.com, the server will only know that someone with your cookie has returned to the web site. You decide what, if anything, you want Pricecharts.com to know about you. Keep in mind, however, that the more you tell Pricecharts.com about yourself, the more helpful it can be in providing the information and services you desire.

Why does Pricecharts.com keep asking me to accept cookies?
If you set your browser preferences to warn you before accepting cookies, you will be asked whether you want to accept a cookie each time Pricecharts.com wants to write one. If you set your browser to accept all cookies, this warning will go away. (For more on this topic, see the following question.)

How do I manage my cookies?
Your can set your browser preferences to either accept all cookies or alert you each time a cookie is offered. For Pricecharts.com, Netscape recommends that you set your browser to accept all cookies. You can set this preference in your browser as follows:
  • Communicator 4. On your task bar, click Edit, then Preferences, then Advanced. Choose the Accept All Cookies option in the box labeled Cookies.
  • Navigator 3. On your task bar, click Options, then Network Preferences, then Protocols. Unclick the checkbox for Show Alert before Accept All Cookies.
  • Microsoft Internet Explorer 4. Choose View, then Internet Options. Click the Advanced tab, scroll down to the yellow exclamation icon next to Cookies, and choose Accept All Cookies.
If you're using Communicator 4, Netscape bundles all cookies into one file on your hard drive, called cookie.txt. In Windows you can usually find this file in the \Program Files\Netscape\Users \yourname\ directory for Communicator 4 and in the \Program Files\Netscape \Navigator\ directory for Navigator 3. You can then open the file with any text editor or word processor.

If you're using Internet Explorer 4 you can go about finding your cookie file in the following way: On your Explorer task bar, click View, then Internet Options. Under the General (default) tab, click Settings, then View Files.

You can see the cookie's contents by opening it. There you'll see a short string of text and numbers. The numbers are your identification card, which can only be seen by the server that gave you the cookie.

How do I print a page, such as a chart, from the Pricecharts.com web site?
With Netscape Communicator it's quite easy: simply click on the print icon located at the top of the navigation frame on the left side of your screen. Your browser's Print dialogue box will pop up, allowing you to access your printer capabilities.

For all other browsers, you must access print capabilities through the FILE menu. To print the content within the main window (or frame) of the site, you must:

  1. Click anywhere within the window (frame) that you wish to print. This will select the frame.
  2. Then:
    • If you are using the Netscape browser, select "Print Frame" from the FILE menu. When the Print dialogue box pops up, click "OK".
    • If you are using the Internet Explorer browser, select "Print" from the FILE menu. When the Print dialogue box pops up, choose the option for "Only the Selected Frame", then click "OK".

When I view a chart, the displayed data is not current. Why? And how do I correct this problem
Your browser probably has an old, or previous, version of the chart page stored in its "Temporary Internet Files" (IE) or "Cache" (Netscape) directory. This directory acts like a storage bin for all of the downloaded pages and graphics that have been viewed through your browser. Sometimes your browser won't display a page correctly because it doesn't realize that the page has changed. It sees that a copy of the page has already downloaded to this directory and thinks it is the right one.

To correct this problem, you need to force your browser to download the updated version of the page so that the current chart will display:

  • If you are using Internet Explorer, right-click anywhere within the chart window to select the frame and cause a pop-up menu to appear. From the list of options on this menu, click on REFRESH. This should cause the page to reload and display the updated chart.

  • If you are using Netscape, right-click anywhere within the chart window to select the frame and cause a pop-up menu to appear. From the list of options on this menu, click on RELOAD FRAME. This should cause the page to reload and display the updated chart.
